PEORIA, Ill. – The investigation is continuing, but Peoria Police Friday released body camera video and images from October 3’s officer-involved shooting in South Peoria.
“This incident resulted in a weapon being found next to Mr. Richmond’s body,” said Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria.
The video is from when police shot and killed Samuel Vincent Richmond, 59, in the area of Martin Luther King Park.
“When the first officer arrived on scene, the officer found a person fitting the description of the 911 call,” said Echevarria. “The…still image shows a man matching the description pointing a gun at officers. And, that’s when shots are fired,” said Echevarria.
Echevarria says there was a pause in the shots being fired, until more officers arrived.
“As more officers arrived on scene, there is a pause in gunfire until you see…Mr. Richmond attempting to get up, ignoring officers’ commands to stay down. Gunfire continues.”
Richmond was later pronounced dead at the scene.
This comes about a month after family members demanded more transparency and accountability from police.
Illinois State Police, meanwhile, continue an independent investigation into the shooting. The officers involved remain on leave.
