PEORIA, Ill. — It’s primary election day in the Heart of Illinois with a wide range of political races and issues on local ballots.
Voters are also encountering a newer paper ballot voting system.
Many primary voters are likely to be most interested in the statewide Republican primary race for Governor of Illinois. The race has seen a bevy of negative advertising between several of the top candidates, including Darren Bailey, Jesse Sullivan and Richard Irvin.
Also just this past weekend, Bailey accepted the endorsement of embattled former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
Another local race of interest is likely to be the race for Peoria County Sheriff, among others. Captain Chris Watkins plays the part of outgoing Sheriff Brian Asbell’s hand picked successor, but voters could bring a surprise and go with challenger Jason Buckley.
There are also primary races for a range of legislative positions at both the state and federal level.
Peoria County Elections Commission Chair Tom Bride says voters are urged to double check their polling location as there have been some changes. “We went from 58 to 56 polling locations when we did our redistricting, but we didn’t change a lot of the locations.”
Of course, it’s important to note this is an open primary, however voters will be asked to choose which party’s primary ballot they want to mark up.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
