WASHINGTON, D.C. — Illinois’ 17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos on Wednesday announced $7 million in a major funding package for a climate resilience and biomanufacturing initiative at Peoria’s Ag Lab.
“We are excited to see this investment in the Ag Lab and the Greater Peoria region. The Ag Lab is a quiet but powerful economic engine in our community and this investment will only increase their importance. Beyond jobs, though, the expansion of research this investment allows will help both the region and the entire nation,” said Chris Setti, CEO of the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council.
Bustos is also working to secure funds for the Cradle to Career Initiative at Illinois Central College.
“We could not be more excited about the funding of the Jump Starting the Peoria Cradle to Career Initiative, which lays the foundation for community revitalization of the 61605 neighborhood. Through assessments of each family’s education, workforce training, employment, housing, healthcare, and other needs, a regional plan will be launched to ensure members of one of the most devastated communities in the country, receive the support they need to become productive and successful members of their community,” said Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey, President of Illinois Central College.
$1 million is being earmarked for the demolition of the former Harrison School in Peoria.
Bustos said, “Demolishing the former Harrison School building will serve the health and safety of residents in one of Peoria’s oldest neighborhoods. The property has sat vacant and abandoned for multiple years, is a major blighting influence on the neighborhood, attracts crime and creates other health hazards.”
The package, passed in the U.S. House, will be voted on by the Senate and signed by President Biden soon.
