Update: Homicide Suspect Arrested, Victim Identified

Peoria Police say Lester Broom, 48, has been arrested for the stabbing death of 58-year-old Shirley King overnight at Taft Homes (530 NE Adams Street).

Officers were called to the scene around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, finding King with a stab wound to the back. She was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says that King’s stab wound caused internal bleeding and damaged organs and blood vessels.

Public Information Officer Amy Dotson says Peoria Police Patrol Officers and members of the Detective Unit developed information as to the whereabouts of Broom. At approximately 3:45 a.m. Monday, Broom was taken into custody without incident in the 600 block of Morton Street.

Broom was transported to the Peoria Police Department for interview purposes where he was subsequently arrested for First Degree Murder. He was then taken to the Peoria County Jail.

The case remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Department and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
