Peoria Driver Involved In Fatal, Springfield Accident

A Peoria woman was involved in a fatal accident near Springfield.

The Springfield State Journal-Register quotes Illinois State Police as saying a jeep, driven by 21-year-old Janay Sheperd of Peoria, struck a tow-truck driver working to load a disabled vehicle along I-72 around 10 a.m. Friday.

The tow-truck driver,┬áRonald Chaney, 56, of Springfield , was pronounced dead at the scene. Shepard’s jeep rolled on its side. She is listed in good condition at a local hospital.

State Police said the tow-truck driver was standing outside of his truck on the right shoulder of westbound I-72 between the MacArthur Boulevard and Veterans Parkway exits when the Jeep utility vehicle veered to the right, striking the disabled car and tow-truck driver.

The investigation continues.
