Pekin Police Welcome New K-9 Bas

Meet Bas (pronounced Boz), the active two-and-a-half year old Dutch Shephard born in the Netherlands.

This talkative pup is partnered with Officer Ryan Smith.

Bas and Smith began their training in February, and graduated on May 2nd.

Bas has been working with the force since May 9 and has already completed several successful drug sniffs.

Their shifts begin at 8 p.m., which starts off with obediance training.

According to Sgt. Robert Jones, they keep K-9 officers roughly about 10 years, depending on their health.

K-9 officer Ahen will retire this month.
