Access to three Peoria schools will be drastically impacted by a road closure scheduled to begin Monday.

Northmoor Road will be closed at Rosemead Drive, at the entrance to Exposition Gardens, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. Monday.

The closure will affect traffic to and from Richwoods High School, St. Vincent DePaul School and Northmoor Primary School, all located along Northmoor between University Street and Allen Road. The closure is also expected to impact traffic surrounding Rolling Acres Middle School.

City of Peoria Public Works officials tells 1470 and 100.3 WMBD morning traffic to and from the affected schools should flow as normal Monday morning as parents and families arrive to bring their students to school. However, parents and families should be aware the road closure and necessary detours will be in place as schools dismiss Monday afternoon and throughout the construction time period.

The road closure is required to construct underground utilities and a new traffic signal at the Northmoor/Rosemead intersection.

Once Northmoor Road is closed, no traffic will be allowed to cross the intersection of Rosemead Dr. and Northmoor in any direction. Two-way, local traffic will be allowed east and west of the closure area. The road closure is expected to last until early to mid-December. Through traffic should follow the marked detour routes via Willow Knolls Road or Glen Avenue.

Local traffic can access portions of Northmoor Road as follows:

If you are going to travel Northmoor Road to get to/from Richwoods High School, Exposition
Gardens, Rosewood Care Center, or nearby businesses, you must come and go from the Northmoor
Road/University Street intersection.

If you are going to travel Northmoor Road to get to/from Northmoor Elementary School, or any
location west of Rosemead Drive, you must come and go from west of Rosemead Drive.

The new connector road between Northmoor Elementary School and Richwoods High School will
be used only for school buses and emergency vehicles, and access to Exposition Gardens (from the east) during this construction phase.

The City of Peoria’s Department of Public Works is advising the public and area residents of traffic restrictions that will be in place as a result.

Work on the Northmoor Road construction project will stop during the winter months staring early to mid-December, then traffic restrictions will be back in place during the warmer months of 2018 and 2019 as the project continues.

When completed in November, 2019 Northmoor Road will be totally rebuilt between Allen Road and University Street to include three vehicular lanes (one lane in each direction and a center turn lane), a sidewalk on the north side of the road, a biking/walking path on the south side of the road, ornamental street lights, trees and native plants.

The $10.5 million project is supported by approximately $7 million in federal grants.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route, if possible. Also, motorists should exercise caution in the construction zone and watch for workers and pedestrians (especially students) as the schools resume session.

The office of the City Engineer can be contacted with any questions at 309-494-8800 Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
