Local Hospitals Observe Healthcare Decisions Day

Three local healthcare systems are partnering for an event on Monday in observation of National Healthcare Decisions Day.

OSF Healthcare, UnityPoint Health-Peoria, and Pekin Hospital hope to educate the public about end of life medical care with the program.

Linda Fehr, with OSF Healthcare’s Supportive Care Program, says appointing an agent to have power of attorney for you when you can’t speak for yourself is an important first step in making sure your wishes are carried out.

The next step is meeting with that agent and your doctor and signing paperwork that lays out specifics regarding your end of life care.

“We go through a long discussion with the patient and the agent about various topics like licensed end of life treatment, ventilators, and who you would want around you when you die,” said Fehr.

Fehr says, “All the OSF doctors have the program in place, they have someone to go through the paperwork with you in the office. UnityPoint Health and Pekin Hospital are also enbracing the OSF Supportive Care program.”

The Healthcare Decisions event is being held at the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center Monday from 5:00 to 8:00p.m.

Healthcare officials from all three health systems will be answering questions about advance care planning at the event.
