Grocery Store To Open In South Peoria

South Peoria residents have been without a grocery store for nearly two years.

That will change with the opening of a new Save-A-Lot.

City of Peoria officials have announced Save-A-Lot will open in early summer at 210 S. Western Avenue, the same building that formerly housed Aldi’s.

Aldi’s closed the South Peoria store and one in East Peoria in January, 2014 in favor of a new building in East Peoria’s Levee District.

“Save-A-Lot looked at the location and saw it as a viable opportunity, and they’ve made the decision to come in,” says First District Councilwoman Denise Moore.

Moore sees this as huge news for the residents of South Peoria.

“They’ve had to tread out to other locations quite a distance away,” Moore said, “just to get the basic food that’s needed in the community.”

Community gardens and mobile food distribution vans have been attempting to fill the void since Aldi’s closed in South Peoria.
