PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria County office embroiled in controversy is getting a bit of a reprieve.
A Peoria County judge has issued a temporary restraining order leaving the Auditor’s office funded and in tact for at least the next ten days.
While voters in the mid-term election approved abolishing the office in favor of an external auditor, Jessica Thomas was under the impression she’d be in office until 2024 when her term expires.
But, 25 News reports she was sent notice last Friday that the office would be no longer funded as of November 30th, “because the Office is abolished,” and she has to finish up her duties.
That letter cites a 1972 Illinois Attorney General opinion stating that if an office is abolished, funding of it is immediately ended.
Another hearing is scheduled for November 28th.
