SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State taxpayers are on the hook for $23 million in electric vehicle manufacturing incentives that will help grow the sector in Illinois.
On Tuesday, Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker touted new state EV investment that will bring more than 150 new jobs to Decatur, Illinois and new EV manufacturing capacity as well.
A company called T/CCI Manufacturing in Decatur will transition it’s existing fossil fuel combustion engine compressor factory into one that’s also designed to make compressors for electric vehicles.
State funding will also help the town of Decatur and the local Richland Community College coordinate with the company on a new E-V innovation center.
Thus far, one of the primary EV manufacturing centers has been the Rivian plant in Normal, Illinois.
In an emailed release, Gov. Pritzker touted his administration’s backing of the so-called “REV Act” for making more growth in the industry more likely in Illinois.
“We’re bringing all of Illinois into the 21st century economy, with good jobs and business opportunities, and this investment is yet another way we’re making that our reality,” said Pritzker.
The Re-imagine Electric Vehicles Act was designed to facilitate appropriations for projects that would expand Illinois’ green manufacturing economy, particularly in the automotive sector.
The law passed the Illinois General Assembly with near-unanimous bipartisan support during the fall legislative session in 2021.
