SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A new state law aims to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths in Illinois.
The measure, sponsored by Senator Laura Murphy of Des Plaines, requires the Illinois Department of Transportation (I-DOT) to look more closely at fatal accidents on state highways.
“They have to investigate why this fatality occurred, what could be done to have prevented it, how could it have been avoided,” Murphy said.
As part of an investigation, I-DOT will do an analysis of the road or intersection where the accident occurred, then offer and implement recommendations, which could be as simple as adding a stop sign.
The results of each study will then be posted online.
Murphy said she sponsored the measure after a series of fatal accidents in her area.
