Final preparations are underway for the 8th annual Ready to Roll event this weekend.
Jeannine McAllister, with Advocates for Access, says volunteers will build 13 ramps on Saturday, June 22, for local residents with disabilities.
“We started it because we were seeing the need of people being discharged from hospitals and nursing homes back to their own community or their own home, and they couldn’t get in or out of their house,” McAllister said.
McAllister says about 100 volunteers are participating in ramp builds throughout the tri-county area Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Since its inaugural event in 2012, Ready to Roll has built 80 ramps for people with disabilities in Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford Counties.
Advocates for Access spearheaded the application process, while His Helping Hands designed the ADA-compliant wooden ramps.
Advocates for Access, established in 1985, is a center for independent living and empowers people with disabilities to live independently in the community. His Helping Hands, established in 2000, provides safe, secure and accessible homes for people in the tri-county area.
