The City of Washington has a new Chief of Police.

At a special City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Gary Manier announced that Ed Papis, former East Peoria Chief of Police, will replace retiring Chief Don Volk, effective May 1.

Chief Volk is retiring at the end of the month.

Papis has 37 years of law enforcement experience. He served over 10 years as the Chief of Police in East Peoria until his retirement in 2012. He began his career in law enforcement as a Patrol Officer for the City of Peoria in 1975.

Papis will serve for an indefinite temporary period of time until a permanent replacement can be found.
