The Peoria County Facilities Committee will further study the best way to use the Hanna City Work Camp in the short term. The committee was set to approve allowing outside law enforcement and fire protection agencies use of the former site for training purposes. Peoria County Sheriff's Department uses the facility for that purpose now.
Committee member Mike Phelan says the current proposal didn't include any fees for use from outside agencies. He says the county shouldn't foot the bill for it's temporary use. Phelan says he's all for helping area, state and federal governing bodies, but thinks the county shouldn't pay for it's use alone. So, the committee deferred the matter back to legal council and administration to come up with a possible fee structure.
The county acquired the former work camp property and buildings from the state two years ago. They have been trying to figure out what to do with the land since. The property is located 10 miles west of Peoria on Route 116.
