Mental health treatment rather than jail time

There's a new way for people suffering from mental or behavorial issues to get the proper treatement they need. The Integrated Health Center is now open at 1005 NE Jefferson in Peoria. Peoria police Captain Lisa Snow says many people can now get needed treatment instead of simply going to jail or an emergency room. 24-hour non-urgent medical care, including medication is available at the center. Case managers and peer mentors also provide follow-up care. Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy says the center could help to free up some beds in the county jail. "There are certain instances when people have to go to jail no matter what," says McCoy. "Once they get there we'll now have a place we can send them to get some help." The center is a collaboration of the Human Service Center, Methodist Medical Center and Heartland Community Health Clinic.
