(AP) - A judge in Marshall County has sentenced convicted murderer Tony Smith of Lacon to natural life in prison without any chance of parole, and says it isn't enough. In handing down the sentence Thursday against the 40-year-old Smith, Circuit Court Judge Stephen Kouri said the law does not provide adequate punishment for someone who could shoot his estranged girlfriend five times. Smith was convicted of first-degree murder for last April's killing of 49 year-old Judith Berchtold, who was slain at the intersection of Routes 29 and 17 in Sparland. A Lacon police officer shot Smith when he refused to put down his weapon, but he has recovered from his wounds.
