Union Members Celebrate Labor Day

Hundreds of people from around the region celebrated Labor Day in Peoria on Monday.

Representatives of more than 50 unions and business groups marched in a parade that wound through the downtown area during the late morning hours. All of them gathered to support, and stress the importance of, organized labor.

"Unions are important because of the simple human rights they've fought for, and won, over the years, to maintain equality for workers," said Lynnette Lee, a member of AFSCME local 3716.

The parade ended at the Gateway Building on Peoria's riverfront, where barbecue, beer, and live music awaited. Members of Sen. Dick Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn's camps were also there to show support of labor groups.
