Columbus Cup Races Begin Sunday

Illinois Valley Yacht (IVY) Club members will begin racing for the Columbus Cup this Sunday.

Dani Kabbes, Coordinator of Riverfront Events for the Peoria Park District, says the sailboat racing event on the Illinois River is the brainchild of Peoria City Councilman Ryan Spain and former City Council member Bill Spears.

It's a brand new event for the riverfront to really incorporate the river in what we do down here," Kabbes tells 1470 & 100.3 WMBD.

The first day of races at Noon Sunday coincides with Erin Feis. The second day of races is scheduled for Sunday, September 21 during Oktoberfest. The third and final day of races, championship races for the Columbus Cup, will be Sunday, October 12 during Columbus Day weekend.

Races will start at Detweiler Marina.

"The finish line will be at the Gateway Building," Kabbes says. "It will be a big spectacle...awesome for all the spectators during our festivals."

Kabbes says all races feature local sailboats and their racers.

"They are all from the IVY Club," Kabbes says. "They've organized all their racers and their sailors. I think it will be a really great event."

Winners from the first two days of races advancing to the championship will each get a $1,000 cash prize. The overall winner October 12 gets a $5,000 cash prize.
