Changes are coming to the UnityPoint Health-Methodist campus.
Additions include 200 new parking spaces, a new exterior facing I-74, and an atrium lobby on the east side of Glen Oak Avenue to greet outpatient surgery patients.
"Our ambulatory surgery patients will be able to park in the new surface lot and within ten feet of walking in the door they hop on an elevator," Facility Director Vance Vinson tells 1470 & 100.3 WMBD. "The elevator will take them right up to ambulatory surgery. The doors open and literally they're in a waiting room."
"We're here for the patients, they come first," says Vinson.
The new exterior as part of the $10-million enhancement project will provide a uniform look to the UnityPoint Health-Methodist campus.
"It's going to look very much like the improvements to the rest of the building we did four years ago," explains Vinson. "It will tie the building together and make it look like one building."
There will also be new landscaping and new windows.
It also means the iconic smokestack facing I-74 will be demolished.
"Back when (the smokestack) was built, that was the technology then," Vinson says. "You needed the smokestack so the boilers would run. Now with new technology, you don't need the height of the smokestack to ventilate the gases. The building will look and function quite a bit differently than it does today."
Construction of the parking lot is expected to be completed in a few weeks. The remainder of the project is expected to wrap up by July, 2015.
