A Central Illinois family believes it can identify the body found near an East Peoria shopping center.
Ryan Sailors' family claims it was his body spotted in a patch of woods behind Fondulac Plaza on Wednesday afternoon.
The fact that the decomposing body was surrounded by used compressed air cans was the key piece of evidence, a family member relayed to 1470 & 100.3 WMBD.
Sailors' family says he was known to hang around the shopping center, and had an ongoing problem with huffing contents of aerosol cans. His sister also says the height of the person found, plus the clothes he was wearing, match the description of Sailors.
The body was found by Preston Jefford, 12, who was helping search for his cousin, Jeff Kennedy. Kennedy, who suffers from schizophrenia, had been missing for a few days.
Police at the scene Wednesday could say with certainty the body found by Jefford was not Kennedy, who has since been located. Law enforcement officials and the Tazewell County Coroner's office have not formally identified the body as of yet.
The corpse, which had likely been where it was found for several weeks, was so badly decomposed that a positive ID may take three weeks to ascertain.
