Alleged Drunk Driver Kills Peoria Woman

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in a crash that claimed the life of a Peoria woman and put a young child in the hospital.

Doris Ann King, 47, was rushed to the hospital after her car was rear-ended on N. Sterling Ave., near Westminster Ave., around 5:45 a.m. Sunday. Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says King was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour and a half after the wreck.

King's passenger, a four-year-old girl, suffered serious injuries. Police say the girl will likely survive.

Jeffery Steele, 27, was reportedly drunk and speeding when he slammed into King's car. He was arrested for aggravated driving under the influence and taken to the Peoria County Jail after being checked out for minor injuries.

Southbound Sterling Ave. was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash. The road was back open by 2:00 p.m.
