An energy company wants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its four Illinois coal-fired plants.
New Jersey-based NRG Energy Inc. plans to install emissions control technology at the Powerton plant in Pekin and a plant in Waukegan.
NRG also announced plans to eliminate 250 jobs by closing its coal-fired plant in Romeoville and converting its plant in Joliet to natural gas.
The company took over the four Illinois plants in April when it acquired Edison Mission Energy.
The company says the changes represent a more than $500 million investment that will reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions by at least 16 million tons annually by 2020.
