EPA Says No To PCBs

(AP) The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will block the storage of toxic PCBs in a central Illinois landfill that sits over an aquifer that provides water for 750,000 people.

Governor Pat Quinn's office says the state EPA will move to keep PCBs from being dumped in the Clinton Landfill near Clinton after learning that local approval of the landfill in 2002 didn't include PCBs.

The state EPA had earlier signed off on a plan by landfill-owner Area Disposal in Peoria and a subsidiary to store the toxic chemical compounds.

A call to an attorney for the company was not immediately returned.

Many towns that sit over the Mahomet aquifer fear the groundwater could be contaminated by PCBs.

The U.S. EPA is still considering the landfill proposal.
