Destructive Beetle Jumps Quarantine Zone

(AP) The Illinois Department of Agriculture says the destructive emerald ash borer has been found in Peoria and Tazewell counties.

In Peoria County, they were found near Dunlap and Peoria. In Tazewell County, state officials found them in Minier using surveillance traps.

Agriculture officials say it was a "significant" find because the beetles were outside the boundaries of the state quarantine set up to prevent the spread. The Illinois quarantine includes 49 counties.

The emerald ash borer is a metallic-green beetle. Its larvae tunnel into ash tree bark. That causes the trees to starve and eventually die.
