Event Offers Free School Supplies

Dream Center Peoria is ready to hand out 3,000 backpacks to District 150 students through an event called "Backpack Peoria."

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Dream Center, located at 714 Hamilton Blvd.

"When they come into the door, we have 20 to 30 high school students cheering these families on," Dream Center Executive Director Matt Larson tells 1470 & 100.3 WMBD. "We want it to be a celebration."

Larson says the high schoolers are among hundreds who will be there. Those students are in Peoria as part of a mission trip and have spent much of the week filling the backpacks.

"They are from all over the United States," Larson says. "They're not here to go to camp, they're here to serve this community."

Students were also handed their school uniforms in past years. But, Larson says, changes in funding have resulted in a change for this year's event.

"Parents can get an application and apply for uniforms through their school," Larson explains. Students who are approved for uniforms will get them at a later date.

Each school affected will have a table set up in Dream Center's Expo Room and all the principals will be on hand to meet the students and their families.

Additionally, there will be dental exams and the opportunity to use computers to register for District 150's Family Access.

Families and students will be begin lining up as early as 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Saturday. Harrison Street from Glendale to Perry will be closed during the event.

Donations are still being accepted. You can donate funds toward the effort in person at Dream Center Peoria, or here.
