The final piece of the puzzle is in place.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday to celebrate the opening of the Rock Island Greenway Bridge, which spans over North Knoxville Ave. in Peoria to connect the Rock Island Trail. The installation of the bridge marked the completion of the 26 mile-long Rock Island Trail.
The bridge, located just south of Junction City, has already drawn plenty of praise from cyclists who otherwise would have to risk crossing the busy street to follow the trail.
"This is going to be really nice," said cyclist Jack Bregc when the bridge was first lifted into place in late February. "I live not far from here, so I'll be able to jump on the trail and ride out north of Peoria."
The $3.7 million project marks the end of a 40 year effort to complete the trail. The bridge's construction was funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
