Hockey Fans Saying Goodbye To Bruce Saurs

Peoria hockey fans begin to say their final goodbyes to Bruce Saurs. The co-owner of the Peoria Rivermen died last Thursday at the age of 88.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at Northwoods Community Church. The funeral is at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church, with an additional visitation one hour before the funeral. Saurs will be laid to rest at Resurrection Mausoleum.

Saurs is known for saving the game of hockey in Peoria twice. Saurs bought the financially struggling Peoria Rivermen in 1989 and owned the team until he sold it to the St. Louis Blues in 2008.

When the Blues abandoned the Peoria market last year, Saurs stepped in to join a group in buying the team again and placing it in the SPHL.

Saurs was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1995, the Rivermen Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Bradley University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
