Court Victories For Gay Rights Advocates

(AP) For the first time, a federal appeals court has ruled that states must allow gay couples to marry.

The decision from a three-judge panel in Denver upheld a lower court ruling that struck down Utah's gay marriage ban, putting the issue one step closer to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The panel immediately put the ruling on hold so it could be appealed.

In a separate ruling, a federal judge in Indiana struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage.
