Getting The Lead Out

The Peoria City/County Health Department is working to rid older homes of lead-based paint--specifically in the city's poorest neighborhoods.

"We have a higer incidence of lead poisoned children, and subsequently, that's where we've focused our resources.", said health department administrator Greg Chance.

In 2010, the Peoria City/County Health Department tested 3,300 children in the 61603, 61604, and 61605 zip codes for lead poisoning. About 11-percent, or roughly 360 children, tested positive.

Chance says the health department has already used $2.5 million dollar in grant money to address the problem in about 200 homes.

The health department plans to apply for more funding this week that will also identify problems with radon, mold, and other allergens that can make people sick.
