Old and tattered U.S. flags were destroyed with respect on Peoria's riverfront Saturday evening.
American Legion, Post II offered a prayer before a flag retirement ceremony held at Riverfront Park's Constitution Garden, calling for everyone to "return the respect" the flag has given us.
"You don't want to put a flag in the garbage can," said Billy Craig, with the American Legion.
Craig says the ceremony, part of the annual Flag Day observance, is more than honoring our nation's colors. He says it's also an awareness campaign aimed at ensuring flags that are no longer useable are disposed of in the proper way.
"This is the right way to do things. Let's keep on doing it," he said.
Craig says the Legion accepts flags that need to be retired. You can drop them off at the building, located at 110 East McClure Ave.
