Pekin Now Eligible For Rural USDA Programs

The City of Pekin has a few economic development tools in its toolbox.

The United States Department of Agriculture announced Friday that the agency has designated Pekin as a "rural" community, opening it up to several programs aimed at sparking business growth. Seven business initiatives are now open to Pekin to provide affordable financing for private, public, and nonprofit organizations.

"We are very excited to offer new tools to support Pekin's efforts to develop a dynamic business environment," Illinois State Director for Rural Development Colleen Callahan said at a news conference.

Pekin was earlier ineligible to receive the rural designation because of its proximity to Peoria.
