When Did You Last Give Blood?

"Summer is a very important time for patients here in Central Illinois, and around the country", according to Ben Corey with the American Red Cross in Peoria.

Typically, summer is when they see a significant drop in blood donations.

The American Red Cross encourages all eligible donors to give now, especially those with types O negative, B negative, and A negative, to help prevent a shortage.

Mary Gillette, of Dunlap, has been donating blood for over a year and a half, about every 8 weeks or so.

Gillette says she started giving blood at a school blood drive, and continued to give.

Saturday, June 14th, is World Blood Donor Day, when the American Red Cross hopes to raise awareness of the continued need of blood all year long, especially during the summer months.
