CityLink officials say the kickoff of a new service was a success.
2,896 bus rides were provided on Sunday, the first day CityLink offered the expanded weekend service in its history. Spokesperson Anna Buehrer says the total amount of rides nearly tripled the transit system's projection.
"We were maybe thinking 1,000 rides or something like that," Buehrer tells 1470 & 100.3 WMBD. "Especially since we hadn't done this before and not knowing what the need was."
Monday through Friday, buses follow 23 routes in Peoria and surrounding cities. Buehrer says on Sundays, just nine routes are run serving only the City of Peoria. But for the people who rely on buses to get around, even the limited service made all the difference in the world.
"It was really heartwarming for me to see people in their work uniforms using the bus service," Buehrer says. "That's what it's all about."
Buehrer says if there's enough demand for the Sunday routes, CityLink may expand the service.
