State Legislators Face Budget Deadline

The Illinois Legislature is expected to send a new state budget to Gov. Pat Quinn as the session winds down.
The Senate is set to approve the approximately $35.7 billion spending plan on Friday.

The House passed it earlier this week.

The budget was drafted after House Democrats said they didn't have the votes in an election year to make Illinois' temporary income tax increase permanent.

It keeps funding flat next year for schools and most state agencies.

But it could still lead to layoffs and more delays in paying bills because it doesn't include money for increased costs.

Lawmakers acknowledge they'll need to return after the election to approve new revenue in order to avert a "fiscal cliff."

The Legislature faces a Saturday deadline to adjourn.
