House Advances $1 Billion Capital Construction Plan

(AP) - The Illinois House, in a 97-11 vote, passed a plan to fund $1 billion in new transportation projects.

The legislation passed Thursday would fund what transportation Secretary Ann Schneider calls "shovel ready" road and bridge projects across the state.

The projects will be paid for by selling bonds and paying back the loan with revenue from retired bonds. Schneider said if both chambers approve the bill, construction can start as early as this summer.

The legislation now heads to the Senate. It requires a three-fifths majority approval from both chambers before being sent to Governor Pat Quinn's desk.
