Hundreds gathered at Peoria's Gateway Building to remember soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Col. Robbie Robertson urged everyone to take time this Memorial Day to honor the exceptional men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep our nation free, saying the holiday isn't just about barbecues and the beginning of summer.
"They are our sons and daughters," he said. "They passed the torch to you. We must never forget."
City Council members Eric Turner, Tim Riggenbach, Chuck Weaver, Casey Johnson, and Beth Jensen attended the event, helping to escort relatives of fallen soldiers as wreaths were laid in remembrance of all casualties of war. Mayor Jim Ardis could not attend the service because his son was returning from overseas.
Other ceremonies were held throughout the day at Glen Oak Park, the Peoria County Courthouse Plaza, and at Tower Park in Peoria Heights.
