Shooting Is Now Peoria's First 2014 Homicide
The Peoria Police Department is investigating its first homicide of 2014.
The victim, who was only identified as a man about 30 years of age, died at a local hospital early Wednesday afternoon. He was shot in the chest in a courtyard at the Landmark Apartments off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive around 11:45 a.m.
A witness said the shooting appeared to be the result of a burglary gone wrong, although Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard could not immediately confirm that. He said it was possible, as were speculations that the homicide was gang-related.
"We just don't know," Settingsgaard said.
There were two suspects spotted running from the scene. Both were described as black men, one of whom had dreadlocks. No further description was initially available.
