"Gator Dash" debuts at Quest Charter Middle School.
Event coordinator Emily Schaid, a Bradley University Senior, says the purpose is to get the school's 5th and 6th graders away from their electronic devices more, by being more active.
Organizers conducted dance competition, an obstacle course, and other physical and cognitive challenges.
An "Activity Fair" was also held in conjunction to entice the kids to become interested in other hobbies besides their phones and video games.
Quest Assistant Principal Emily Scott says the students were excited about Gator Dash from the moment they heard about it. Scott says, hopefully this becomes an annual competition at Quest Middle School.
Area businesses provided prizes for the students as incentive to "power off electronic devices one step at a time".
