The Peoria Rivermen will soon become property of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks.
A news release issued by the Rivermen office states Vancouver has agreed to buy the Rivermen, the St. Louis Blues' American Hockey League franchise, from the Blues.
The transaction is subject to approval by the AHL and neither side will comment during the approval process.
What the Canucks plan to do with the Rivermen has yet to be ironed out.
The Canucks' current AHL affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves expires after this season.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Wolves are expected to own and operate an AHL affiliation for the Blues.
The Canucks, meanwhile, would like to put an AHL team in Abbotsford, B.C. However, that market currently has a long-term lease agreement with the Calgary Flames.
If the Canucks are not able to put its AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, or another city, the franchise could keep the Rivermen in Peoria during the 2013-14 season.
