A Canton woman who served as a bookkeeper at Bartonville Grade School has been accused of stealing nearly $8,000 from the school before quitting last summer. Penny Wells was arrested Saturday and later charged with felony theft. She was being held Tuesday in lieu of $1,500 bond. Wells, 34, held the job at the Bartonville school for nearly two years.
Authorities say an examination of financial records revealed money was taken from the school's accounts over several months. Authorities say the funds were specifically from concession sales and sporting event ticket sales. Volunteers typically collect the money and leave it with the main office for deposit the day after an event.
