Drop, Cover and Hold on

Peoria City/County Health Department will be seeking shelter under their desks at 10:15 Tuesday and they suggest you do the same thing at home or work. Spokesperson Diana Scott says the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is a an earthquake drill.

"We all drill for tornadoes and fires, now we drill for earthquakes," Scott tells 1470 WMBD. "The New Madrid seismic zone extends into Southern Illinois and there are numerous faults throughout the state."

"We need to encourage people to be prepared for earthquakes and practice how to protect themselves."

Scott says during an earthquake, remember to "Drop, Cover and Hold On." Drop to the floor...take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture and...hold on to the furniture and be ready to move with it until the shaking stops.

You can register your participation in the the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut at www.shakeout.org/centralus.

More than three million people in 11 states participated in last year's shake out, including around 260,000 people in Illinois.
