Ray LaHood's son barred from leaving Egypt

The son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is one of several U.S. citizens barred from leaving Egypt. That's according to a multimedia journalism organization known as Politico.

Sam LaHood heads the Egyptian program for the International Republican Institute. He tried to board a plane in Cairo to leave the country Saturday, but was told he was on a "no fly list."

The IRI was among 17 agencies raided by Egyptian forces last month. Computers, documents and money were seized. Egyptian official say they were looking for what they called "foreign influence" during recent elections.

The president of the institute is quoted by Politico as saying Sam LaHood and the others have not been told why they cannot leave Egypt but they still have their passports.

A state department official told Politico, without naming names, that several U.S. citizens were being detained in Egypt.

The others kept in Egypt with Sam LaHood include two other Americans.
