Dist. 150 board to talk discipline and cell phones

Peoria Public Schools will take another look at its policies involving discipline. There will also be a review of what specific punishment is handed out for cell phone use.

Peoria District 150 school board member Debbie Wolfmeyer says, "I know there's a thinking out there all the schools are out of control. I do not believe that's true."

"But," Wolfmeyer continues, "I do think we have some problem areas that are close to that."

Fellow board member Laura Petelle has suggested students themselves be part of the process. "If we can get the students to buy into it by participating in creating the limits it would be helpful," Petelle says. "I think it would also help (board members) understand what's going on with cell phone bullying in the schools."

Superintendent Grenita Lathan says, "No, we are not saying the answer is taking the cell phones away, in this day and age you can't do that."

"But we do need students to be a bit more responsible in how they use their cell phones."

Lathan says discipline will be listed among the agenda items for board Committee of the Whole meetings next Monday and again in March.
