A group of East Bluff residents are concerned about a plan by the Islamic Center of Peoria to put a new cemetery in the area.
The Peoria Zoning Commission will hear a request this afternoon to obtain a special use to allow for a 641 plot Muslim cemetery at 1500 East Elmhurst Avenue.
Several residents in the area of the proposed cemetery expressed concerns to the Journal Star about the plan wondering why plots could not be purchased at nearby Springdale Cemetery. Leah Allison, a senior urban planner with the city, says that idea has been suggested to the petitioner. Jon Austin with Springdale tells the paper says he has not been contact by the Islamic Center about the proposed cemetery.
The Zoning Commission meeting takes place at 1pm today at Peoria City Hall. Final approval or denial of the plan would have to come from the Peoria City Council.
