If you still have room to make another New Year's Resolution, officials from Peoria Disposal Company hope you decide to recycle. More than 2,000 households made that decision last year and it's hoped more will do it in 2012.
Allison Peffer is coordinator of PDC's recycling program. "For every ton of materials a family recycles in our area we conserve enough energy to power a home for five months," says Peffer. "Last year residents in Peoria recycled about 1,800 tons of paper, plastics and other materials."
Officials say in a lifetime, the average American throws out 600 times his or her weight in garbage.
Peffer says it's easy to do...especially if you sign up for the PDC's "Single Stream" program. "You can put your paper, plastics, glass, metal, aluminum cans...everything goes in one bin," says Peffer. "You don't have to sort it. And, there's even a label which outlines a specific list of what you can and cannot recycle."
