Taking the Polar Plunge

(WEEK News 25) - Before you judge such a large group of people for doing such a largely (let's say brave) thing, you should realize eight local charities that benefit children will receive the proceeds from the people taking this plunge.

"We've donated over 88,000 over the last nine years, so we're hoping to break 100,000 this year,: says East Peoria Boat Club's Commodore, Darren Leeper. "I think we're going do it."

Leeper leapt in the water for the first time to kick start the event.

He hopes his maiden plunge in the Illinois River will be a celebration for reaching their goal with the line of about 500 people behind him.

One of which yells, "You need to experience this, guy! Come on in with us! Jump! Jump! Jump!"

I thought about getting in the water myself, but wasn't quite dressed for it, and I gave up hurting myself as a New Year's resolution.

The Peoria Push Derby Dames came out to advertise their own charity.

Proceeds from their opening season roller derby game this Saturday night will go towards the Peoria Rescue Mission.

"We've raised $27,000 from one bout and some bouts get 3,000. It just depends on how many people come and how much we advertise it," says one of the Derby Dames.

The other adds, "The more people who come the better, and the more we raise for our charity, so come out!"

Leeper says that's the true spirit behind the Polar Plunge.

Besides the thrill of the chill, the event is helping children.

"Plus, you get out, enjoy the breeze and all that," adds Bill Kenney.

The shirtless, 7th year Polar Plunger appears more to be celebrating summer with a beer and a cigar in hand.

But he says, "That's right! That's the way to go!"
