Peoria County States Attorney Highlights Some New 2012 Laws

Among the usual plethora of new laws on the books statewide in the new year, the Peoria County States Attorney thinks one will particularly stand out.  Jerry Brady says it will be illegal to sell a synthetic recreational drug to now be sold in convenience stores and gas stations.  Brady says the synthetic marijuana's overall legality will be on the legislative docket in 2012.

Brady explains why the drug, also known as 'Head Trip' has been legal to commercial sellers up until now.  He says the K-2 doesn't have every ingredient included in it to be considered cannabis under current law.  So, if you see the item in stores in 2012, Brady advises that's against the law.  Commerical sale of the product could bring anywhere from 1 to 60 years incarceration for a felony conviction.

Brady also says beginning in 2012, if authorities seize personal property of some arrested individuals,  courts have to hold a probable cause hearing within 14 days to determine the validity of holding onto the arrested's personal property.

Brady says in 2012, sex offenders who arrend college will have to disclose their situation with the institution.  Also, convicted murderers will have to register with communities they live in, when they are released from prison.
