New year to ring in local sales tax hikes

(From WEEK News 25) - The new year brings tax increases in some communities. One of them locally is Peoria Heights.

The retail tax rate there for most non food purchases has 7.75%. It will increase by a half percent to one come Sunday..

The final tax rate combines the city's 1.5% tax with the county and state's rate to a total of 8.25%.

Store owners say they don't think it will make a difference in shopping habits.

"I really don't see it having an impact on our business. We had been in Peoria before for a number of years and our customers were accustomed to paying that tax rate there, and a lot of our customers came from the Heights themselves," said Adam White, Owner of Running Central in Peoria Heights.

Tax increases are also to take effect in West Peoria, and in the Farm Creek business district in East Peoria which includes the new Bass Pro shops.
