(From WEEK News 25) - A Pekin family is asking for the public's help after a fire destroyed much of their home late Christmas Eve morning.
Teresa Jones says her home caught fire around 11:20 a.m. She says it started when faulty wiring in an electrical-outlet sparked in the kitchen. The fire then spread across the room, eventually reaching a pan sitting on the stove, which was full of grease.
No one was injured, but Jones says the family's home and belongings, including their Christmas presents, are a total loss.
"There's just no words that you can use to describe it when it happens on Christmas Eve," she said. "Like I said, most of their presents were destroyed. To have most of our possessions gone, you know, it's just really, really hard."
The property is owned by the Pekin housing authority.
Neighbors are helping move the family of six into another unit, but they are in need of things like clothes, blankets, kitchen-ware and other items.
